My Review:

This is a wonderful devotional with daily readings. Each reading is a stand alone time of focus and reflection with seven contributing authors. While the book is dated 2012 with the date at the top of each page, one could enjoy this book each year by going by day of the year. Each day starts with a scripture, an applicable written portion and concludes with a faith step. I value that different translations of the Bible are utilized which broadens my reading as I usually utilize the NIV. The authors bring their own revelation and experiences to their daily writings which resonate and remain with me throughout the day. I was pleasantly surprised that upon reading familiar scripture in this devotional I have been able to learn something new about myself and how it pertains to my faith. I particularly enjoyed the reading from the 27th of April on Matthew 6:33 by Tricia Goyer and saw a different perspective on how to apply that scripture to my daily life. This would be a wonderful addition to your faith journey.

My Review:
Susan is a very gifted author. Each of her books can be read as a stand alone, albeit, they may be part of a series. She offers a variety of styles and plot lines which always hit home. This book tugged at me from the very beginning. It is evident that Noelle and Eli are struggling in their marriage as she didn't share with him where she was going on a particular day and he relishes in spending time alone fishing. A sudden accident gives a second chance at rebuilding their marriage. The characters in this book are incredible and so many applicable lessons on forgiveness and letting go of the past to be able to move on. The option to live in isolation or invest the time to renew a love. This book reads like a true to life story and brings to life human emotions. I highly recommend this book!

My Review:

Suzanne is my favorite author and I can't say enough about how her writing speaks to me. If you haven't read this new release or her other offerings I strongly encourage you to do so. I feel so strongly about her work that I purchased copies of Lancaster County Christmas to give to some select friends for Christmas as I felt they needed to experience her writing for themselves. You can read my review of Lancaster County Christmas here and The Search here. Suzanne's books are all outstanding, yet each one unique and brings out different emotions and life lessons. The Keeper is another stellar offering of Suzanne's talented writing.

Julia's heart is set on marrying Paul, however, he cancels their wedding plans yet another time. Her heart is broken and her demeanor crushed. Julia is the eldest child in the Lapp family comprised of two other daughters, a son and whose father (Amos Lapp) has a failing heart and mother has passed away. An outsider comes to their home to serve as housekeeper (Fern) with rules of her own that appear harsh, however, has the best interest of the family in mind. Roman travels to Stoney Ridge each year with his bees and knows Fern from another state through sad circumstances.

The story beautifully unveils the heart of the characters as each chapter unfolds. Those you may not have immediately been drawn to appear softer after knowing the history of their pain. The story does brings devastating circumstances of loved ones lost, inclusive of one of Julia's immediate family members passing, but not without passing on a vital part of their physical being to save another. Life is lost, yet renewed in another. A love that appeared genuine is lost and true love found and life at Windmill Farm will never be the same!

Christmas Greetings by Tiny Prints

I love Christmas. My two favorite times of year are Christmas and Easter as we celebrate the birth of Jesus at Christmas and his death and resurrection at Easter.

In this modern age many people post photographs on facebook and other online communication tools, but I still love getting an envelope in the mail addressed to my family with a photograph of friends/family whether they are one neighborhood over or across the globe.

Christmas cards are displayed on a card hanger in our home throughout the Christmas season.

After Christmas is over I place the cards in a basket and one of my children pull one out each evening. We share with the boys how long we have known the family and share special memories we hold in our heart of that individual/family. It is a beautiful way to cherish the cards and we also pray for the giver of that card that evening.

In past years I have also placed photograph greetings cards in a scrapbook. It is amazing to look back at previous years to see how families have grown in number and also how children are maturing through the years.

My Review:

An incredibly beautiful written book about relationships, multi-generations and days gone by. This book weaves in the history of Word War II in a beautiful way as you relive the past through the eyes of a soldier who represented America during the war and witnessed horrendous events and also were instructional in freedom. The book is also about the freedom from the past on many levels and of true love found.

A wonderful book that I can't recommend enough!

My Review:

This story is a beautiful example of dreams that are more than fulfilled. When disappointment is apparent it is only because the full plan has not yet unfolded. The story is stunning in delivery and prose and the illustrations dovetail beautifully with the written word. I can't convey what it meant to me to sit on the couch with my young son and hear him read the words to me and then be able to discuss the importance of living our life to please God and giving all to him as the three trees depicted in the book fulfilled their individual purpose. A must read and addition to all Christian families to read at both Christmas and Easter.

My Review:

This is the first book of Tamera's that I have read, however, it certainly will not be the last. This is a beautifully penned novel published by Bethany House based in the 1800's. The story is a beautiful portrayal of love and redemption. The storyline touched me in a deep way as you see the hand of God in the lives of the characters and how each one plays a part in the masterpiece of who were were and what God has been able to do. This story also impressed the importance of living our life for eternal worth. What we do today does indeed make a difference in the future. The characters are beautiful and the story draws you in from the beginning. The story reveals the depth of each character of time, just as you would when getting to know a friend and building a relationship. There is more than meets the eye. This is well worth reading and I can't wait for the Tamera's second Belmont Mansion novel.

My Review:

This book is full of mystery and intrigue. Upon Camden's arrival in the small town of Etherton she is immediately saddened by learning that her Grandmother had only passed a few days prior. There are many secrets contained in the walls of Crescent Hill that have been guarded for many years. The story unfolds by sharing the past history of not only the Underground Railroad and other events that took place in the family, but you learn about some of the past pain another key character, Alex, experienced. The book weaves faith and love in the storyline beautifully. Melanie is a very talented writer and I highly recommend this book.

My Review:

This book is a perfect delight for any season, but with Christmas approaching would make a lovely gift for friends and family. Susan brings the characters to life and you will find yourself feeling for Dottie and desiring to be in the storm with her and the four individuals that join her for several days. A winter storm brings them together, however, each person has internal storms of their own.

My Review:

This is a fun work of fiction set in the time when party lines were coming to play. The book has some laugh out loud moments, mystery and romance. The characters jump to life as you are taken back in time. Sit back and escape for a while as you learn about Luke and Georgie and smile along with way.

My Review:

This is a wonderfully woven book of two countries/cultures and families. What a beautiful book about a Pastor and his wife who desperately desire a child. When they arrive in China anticipating a baby girl, the orphanage presents them with a young lady. Immediately, you feel the love of Lily who was born in China and now lives in America, however, feel the pain of the siblings who are not united with their birth sister.

Lily's birth sister desires more than anything to reunite with Lily and has the connection to do so when learning of a genetic defect. This story unveils human relationships to the core, along with the fear of losing and of desperately wanting what we think we should have in terms of love and commitment. Ultimately Lily makes the choices she feels are best for herself.

This story is a beautiful depiction of relationships and love. As I read the pages I couldn't help but think of those families that are a unit by heart choice not birth and of those birth mothers who for reasons we need not know, made a decision to place their babies in the arms of another to raise and love.

My Review: This book by Susan May Warren contains many interesting personal choices along the way that peel back another layer of each character. Two sisters with very different motives and desires come to the realization that life has a way of taking you to places and in situations you could not even conceive. Esme and Jinx are completely different in appearance and desires. The daughters of a newspaper magnate who desires to find a suitable match for his eldest daughter that will result in business and personal benefits (monetary). The eldest daughter choses her own path for love while Jinx steps in to marry Foster whom has given Jinx indication that he also cares for her.

The reader is under the impression that both girls will live a fulfilling and personally blessed life based on the desires of their hearts, but things take an immediate turn for both Esme and Jinx and the book unfolds their life of steps that bring joy and those that bring sorrow. We also learn of decisions their parents made along their lifelong journey which had a profound impact on the present day in which the book was placed.
The book contains some of the best and worst characteristics we see in mankind and sins that are attempted to be hidden that haunt for many years.

Heiress is an amazing book that permits the reader to follow siblings on different paths and how decisions have a profound impact for the future. I highly recommend this book and look forward to the next Daughters of Fortune release.

My Review: This is a great paperback book with eye catching illustrations of the story of Noah's Ark. I have read it many times in various versions for children and this one stands above others with the vibrant imagery and two full pages of wall clings. Children will receive the Biblical message via hearing/reading it and also have a feast for their eyes with the illustrations by Luana Rinaldo. As a parents/caregiver you could opt to use the wall clings on windows, glass doors, walls or even dry erase boards. What a great way to impress the story in the mind and heart of little ones as they reenact this story of obedience and promise via the wall clings and have the ability to use them multiple times.

My Review:

This book is full of relevant information that everyone who takes part in any form of social media and/or computer activity needs to read. It is full of information not only regarding the pros and cons or the rapid pace that technology is changing, but digs deeper with real life examples that show both sides of the spectrum. It is thought provoking and I am confident will make you reflect on the amount of time you spend online as well as the way in which you communicate your message to your followers if you tweet and to your friends if you use a social network such as facebook or myspace.

John brought out so many incredible points in the book, but one that really hit home for me was regarding mediums. The mediums of communication we use not only create cultures, but divide them! Mediums shape our thinking and how we feel it is acceptable to interact with others.

I emplore you to read it and be open to the content and reflect on how technology should play a role in your interaction with others and time spent. This book is well worth reading and I highly recommend it.

My Review:

I had the honor to read and review another one of Suzanne's books. You can read that review here. The Search was one of those books I could not put down and has stayed with me. I was thrilled to receive A Lancaster County Christmas. This book is amazing on all levels. This modern day Christmas story opens your heart to step back and realize what needs to be treasured each day of the year. Suzanne permits the reader to understand the struggles of the characters regarding life choices and fears.

As the characters develop we learn of inner turmoil each is facing while appearing on the outside that all is fine. Winter weather results in Jaime's sports car rolling back in the pond at the home of Mattie and Sol. You will sense the uncomfortable beginning of a couple stranded at the Amish farm with people they didn't know and feel concern of how the time will pass. The book is a period of only two days together, however, hearts are opened, words are shared and the true meaning of love and forgiveness is conveyed by all. Ultimately, hearts are healed and relationships mended as we witness peace in the midst of a concerning event during the storm (I don't want to give any spoilers).

This book will touch you in a deep way and will remain with you after the last word is read. I have a deeper appreciation of the Amish and their focus on God and each other. I can't recommend Suzanne's books enough and encourage you to purchase this for yourself and your friends. This book resulted in me wanting to unplug and recharge my soul and appreciation for eternal things. A must read!

My youngest speaks his mind in all seriousness. Here are a few of the interesting things he has said in the last few weeks.

After his bath on the 25th of August I asked him to please dry his kneecaps and legs. He got a big smile and said, "Are my knees wearing caps?" Then, pointed to his knees and made up a song about caps/hats.

The lady that heads up children's worship at our church is adopting a precious little girl from another country. We thought they may be back with her for service this a.m. This morning on the way to church I asked the boys if they thought precious Penny would in Children's Worship wth her mom. My youngest said, "Mom, I don't think so. The music is so loud that if she comes she will cry and cry and cry."

I am NOT balanced at all on my bike. My youngest suggested I get training wheels and learn how to ride a bike by observing him.
Oh the joy of boys!

Books and Facebook

I heart books. I love to see the covers of new releases but also love to feel the pages of an out of print book printed many years ago.

In recent months I have spent too much time on Facebook. Okay, I said it! I made a huge decision yesterday to deactivate my account for a season. Will I miss reading updates of friends, purusing through photograph albums of their vacations and outings? Of course I will. It was a hard decision to deactivate my account for a season, however, it is with the goal that I will gain the opportunity to spend time blogging again. I love to record my thoughts, recipes and moments in time via blogging and have gotten away from that in recent months. I desire more time to read books calling my time. More time for prayer and in God's Word.

So, let's hear it for books. Whether you opt to read a hardback, paperback or a book on your ereader I hope you find a book that enables you to grow and if a work of fiction is your selection may you relate to the characters and anxiously devour each penned word.

In Full Swing and Striving for Balance!

The boys returned to school on August 25th. Things are in full swing as my 1st and 3rd Grader depart in the a.m. and are all smiles at pick up. Both boys seem very pleased with their teachers and are having a great year thus far.

When September comes each year it is a time to get more organized and plan for the coming months of cooler weather, changing colors to feast the eyes upon and more bike rides. My hubby got me a bike for my birthday on August 30th. I have yet to master the art of balance..balance of time well spent and also balance on a bike. I explained to my hubby that I hadn't written a bike in many moons, but wanted a bike to have family bike rides.

I am sure I haven been quite the free entertainment for our neighbors as they witness a lady in her 40's swirving all over on a bike!

Me: Boys, am I staying balanced or a bit wobbly?
Liam: Oh Mom, a bit wobbly.
Aaron: Don't worry, Mom. You can watch me ride and I will teach you. If you fall, I will get you a bandaid like we would give a baby.

So, wish me well as I attempt to master my steal of a deal bike beauty!

Before becoming the pastor of a multi-cultural church in Harrow, Kandiah worked with students in the UK with Universities and Colleges Christian Fellowship, and in Albania with the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students. My Review:

Dr. Kandiah has done an amazing job of providing a way to navigate through the Bible. The book is interesting, thought providing and very useful for an individual, weekly questions that can be read independently or for a small group study. You can use the book over an eight week period five days per week for personal devotions. I highly recommend this book to be used by an entire church congregation, individual or a small group.

About the Ben Freeth:

Ben Freeth, MBE, is a British-born Zimbabwean farmer. He has lived in Zimbabwe most of his life and is raising his three young children there, together with his wife Laura. My Review:

This book will open your eyes to evil going on in our present time. I was not aware of the atrocities taking place in Zimbabwe until reading this real life account by Ben Freeth. This book is eloquently written about first hand accounts of suffering under President Mugabe of Zimbabwe as he has claimed the land of farmers by pure violence. You learn of farmers fleeing for their lives and losing everything. Others turn their heads to the violence around them as it does not directly impact their family or livelihood at the moment. Ben, through strength from God, persevered a long battle which is not yet over for the country and our world. Ben and his loved ones came close to death, witnessed the demise of their farm as arsonists took their evil hand to it, and saw lush land overtaken by weeds. Through all of the trials they remained committed to hold to what is right and true. Ben and his family took a stand and fought an ongoing battle against the injustice of Mugabe and his corrupt allies which ended up in international court. If it were not for their commitment to persevere the world would be blind to what is going on in Zimbabwe.

There is much to glean from this piece of literature. Your eyes will be opened to the world around you and how the fight for justice can be the loss of all we hold dear. This book will move you as you learn of Ben's forgiveness to his assailants and the supernatural peace he experienced on this horrific journey.

My Review:

This book immediately took me to the 1820's and the internal struggles of a young man. The book follows the Rankin family, specifically focusing on the eldest son of the family who is named Lowry. Lowry is the main character in the book, however, I was deeply moved by the other individuals who also portrayed unconditional love and sacrifice for the freedom of slaves. Lowry's parents were a beautiful example of standing strong for what they believed, and, this in turn, was a living example to Lowry of what true love and kindness is through action.

Stephanie beautifully portrayed how at the time Lowry didn't see himself as making a huge impact or world changer. It is evident that he and his family did change the path for many slaves and not only gave them freedom from being owned on the earth, but also pointed them to Jesus. The Rankin family made a decision to live in a location where they could help those in need, and by doing so, risked their own lives and gave up many luxuries as a result. They followed the calling to treat all human beings equal, as we each should. This book brought me to tears several times.

There are still many people in bondage and slavery throughout the world and it is our duty to leave the light on and show them the path to freedom. Thi book is an ideal read for teens up and I highly recommend it to all! This book will instill in each reader that one needs to be willing to make a mark in this world and realize that we can each help others.

Each chapter of the book is only a few pages, however, Debora has provided personal life examples, scripture, quotes and a Decom-Stress section with a few self analysis questions that probe the topic further to implement the tips in your daily life. I can't wait to read more of Debora's offerings. This book made me laugh out loud, however, my importantly, made me feel that the stress of life was lifted off my shoulders as it provides a new perspective on some stress you may be carrying. This book is a must read! A++++++

My Review:This book draws you in immediately. This is a beautiful piece of fiction based on an actual location in England. We see forgiveness being granted and received. The story opens with the passing of the mother of Colin whom he adored. He blames his father for her death which results in Colin attempting to murder him. This leads to him going to the monastery at Glastonbury.

At the monastery Colin meets various characters; one of whom is similar to his father. This book reads beautifully from beginning to end as you enter the times of King Henry VIII and the religious changes taking place. The characters are diverse portraying various elements of the best and worst in each of us. The joy is that Colin experiences the grace of God.

This is an excellent piece of literature and the first I have read by LeAnne. I look forward to reading her other books.

My Review:

This book is a personal account that allows us to journey with Patricia from life as a small child to adulthood. We learn of the insurmountable obstacles she faced that would look impossible for her to obtain a college degree and be a healthy adult, however, indeed she achieves her degree is now happily married with her own family. I found the book a very easy read as if Patricia allowed me to borrow her diary. Parts of the book make me so angry. Angry at what Patricia and her sister had to experience as part of their every day life, however, we see hope. Patricia was determined to overcome poverty and break the cycle of addiction and living on welfare. The book is a beautiful example of tenacity and fortitude.

My Review:

Gary and Lisa have done an incredible job of penning a Biblical approach to handling all that happens in life. The book gives actual examples of life circumstances when we made a decision to turn South or turn North (to God). In my adult years I have been humbled as I have witnessed with my own eyes those I love go through painful times and stay on the path North as they continue to praise God in the midst of earthly horror. Of course, we also have seen those on the path South. The book contains thought provoking questions for heart examination that are ideal for individual or group use. The authors provide scripture throughout and also examples from their own life experiences which spoke volumes to me.

My Review:

Branded by Tim Sinclair is a very interesting book regarding the need for

Believers to share Jesus to the current generation. As a University graduate of 1991 I have witnessed a plethora of not only new technology, but multiple releases of new and improved products. As information is transmitted differently now than previously, we need to be prepared to do the same.

This book is well worth reading. Many of Tim's ideas of how to live out the life of a true Believer are already encouraged in my community of Believers, however, may seem radical to many.

This book is unlike many I have read, and with that, I am sure was uncomfortable for many to read and take the questions posed to heart. As times change, however, we must be prepared to continue to live our life as a beacon of light in this world of darkness.

Summer Reading With Children

My children are still fairly young (6 and 8) and to instill in them the love of reading I provide every possible incentive available. We had great fun last summer doing our Library Summer Reading Program and also participated in Barnes and Noble and Borders. Click here for a list of programs available. They are free to join and you can print the form at home. What a sense of accomplishment to go to the store with a completed sheet of the books read and be able to select a FREE book to add to your own personal library. Also, create awards for reading a set amount of minutes per week and permit your child to select from the award options. Make it fun such as frozen yogurt date out, make your own sundae night at home or even staying up an extra 30 minutes. The key is to make reading fun and provide incentives that will motivate the personality of your individual child.

Our school participates in AR Reading (Accelerated Reader). If you are a homeschooling family or your school does not use AR the website can still be a great resource. Click here to go the website and select parent. You don't have to register or provide any personal information to research books at the desired reading level. I then make a list of what appeals to my children and is in their reading range and via my online library account request the books. I put a post it in the inside cover of each book with the reading level and place in a book basket. This secures my boys are reading books that keep them challenged, however, are also at their personal ability level. Interview with Heather and Lydia Munn, authors of How Huge the Night

1. What influence has living in France had on the writing of this book?

Heather Munn

Heather: I grew up in France, from two years old to about seventeen. Up to ninth grade I went to French public school. The town I lived in was only about an hour’s drive from Le Chambon-sur-Lignon where the true story happened. So when I wrote about Julien living in a small French town, going to school there, and so on, it was almost like writing about my own childhood—except I had to keep asking my dad what it was like forty or fifty years earlier! But it’s more than just the school part—the love for the land that I hope comes through in the book is very much rooted in my childhood—that specific landscape, those hills with genêt bushes on them and pastures and stone farmhouses and little woods—and also the people, the French country people and their culture that’s very rooted in the land, that’s a side of France that Americans don’t get to see a lot, and I love it.

Lydia: When you live in a country for almost thirty years, you grow to love it and its people. I’m glad to be able to write something very positive about France, to counter the mostly negative opinions that I find when I visit the US. Living close to the area where the events happened also made it relatively easy to get a good sense of the context of the story. For instance, I used the actual home of friends of ours who lived in Le Chambon as the model for the Losiers’ home in Tanieux.

2. How much research was involved in writing about historical events? How did you know how much historical detail to provide?

Heather: This might be a really good question for Mom; she did almost all the research and my impression is that it was an enormous amount. She made a timeline that went week by week and included major events of the book, events of the war, the passing of repressive or anti-semitic laws by the Vichy government, everything relevant. I would call her up whenever I had a doubt about anything, or even to ask her “This happened on this date, but how soon would they know about it?” I did do some research of my own when I needed some particular detail about the war, especially when trying to get a feel for what it was like to be there at that time, how people were thinking—what people’s feelings were about the surrender, how people felt about Marshal Petain and the Vichy government right after it was set up, and whether and how much that changed when they started collaborating with the Nazis. I have always had a sort of fascination for World War II and its stories and what you can learn from them about good and evil.

Lydia Munn

Lydia: I have always felt that wartime is a fascinating period to study, though difficult at times, because war is so ugly. War brings out the worst in many people. But it brings out the best in others. And that best shines all the brighter for the very dark context in which you find it. My own interest in this period of French history came about because I wanted to tell the Le Chambon story. I read all the primary sources I could find, visited the town and talked with a few people who lived through the events. I also read all that I could about World War II as seen from the French viewpoint. Knowing the details of the Vichy government, the laws put in place, and so on, enabled us to put some of them into the book. We tried to put in details that Julien would have known about and, sometimes, worried over.

3. How Huge the Night is written for 14- to 17-year-olds, but your readership can certainly go beyond that. How did you get into the mind of a teenager to write this authentically, and yet manage to pen a book that would be of interest to all ages?

Lydia: Even though the main character is a fifteen-year-old, this book was, from the beginning, more than just his story. It’s the story of a family and of a town. The choices that these larger circles were making have an influence on Julien’s choices. There are earlier versions of the book in which some of the scenes were written from Mama’s viewpoint. These ended up being cut in the final version. But behind the story the reader senses Mama’s dread of war which stems from her experiences in World War I. And Papa’s sense of history and of what the invasion really means, as well as Pastor Alex’s clear sightedness—these all form a very real part of the story. I believe this larger picture is what appeals to older readers.

Heather: When I was writing my initial version (after Mom’s initial version) I wasn’t even necessarily writing it for teenagers. But of course the book was chiefly about a teenager, and I wanted him to be a real teenager. I think a real teenager confronted by hard realities is interesting to any age. I still remember very vividly being a teenager and I remember it as a time when everything was felt so deeply, everything had huge significance. You know, when a young child starts learning about the world around him, he sees everything with totally fresh eyes and so he really sees it; and the teenager or young adult is at the end of that journey, at the part where he learns for the first time the really hard realities of life. Pain, and war, and necessity, and death, and the fact that there is no guarantee in life that there will always be someone standing between you and the fear. Watching someone learn those things for the first time, really see their significance, is an awesome thing, in the old sense of the word. That’ll never be boring, and I think an adult to whom it is boring might’ve gone too far into adulthood.

4. What do you hope readers take away from reading How Huge the Night?

Heather: A lot of things. Maybe I shouldn’t say all of them in case I make it too obvious! I think one thing is the huge significance of our daily choices, and how heroism isn’t generally glorious or even clear-cut. The choices that people really made during World War II, the early years, the part I’m writing about, were mostly made in the dark. The usual stuff you see in books and movies—“Am I going to risk my life to save these people from certain death?”—that’s after 1943. In the early years nobody knew about the death camps, not in France anyhow, and under the Vichy government, especially, nobody knew what was going to happen to the Jews if they got arrested, or to themselves if they protected them—they just knew something might happen, and it might be something bad. So it was easy for a lot of people to think, “Oh, but they wouldn’t kill them or anything, right?” because they had enough to worry about already. There was a food shortage, life was hard. The people who did the right thing, a lot of it was just the daily choosing to keep their eyes open, seek out the truth, really take a look at the people in front of them and ask themselves how God was calling them to respond. Julien ends up doing some very good things, but they’re very hidden, not a lot of people are ever going to know about them. And the people who do the real, profound good in the world, that’s how they do it. In a confusing, terrible, messy situation they keep listening to God; and when they hear, they obey; and what they do changes things. But mostly, no one ever knows.

My review:

How Huge The Night is a beautiful work of historical fiction about a small village in France during World War II. This book reads beautiful as you learn about various characters and how the interaction of each as they are faced with serious choices during World War II. It was a time when friends questioned one another based on political allegiance and what they knew to be true in their heart. A time when special individuals took a stand for what was right and encouraged others to do the same. It was a time of fear, starvation and life and death decisions not only for oneself, but for those you opted to protect and/or turn in.

This book spoke to me on many levels. I found the ending beautiful as we see true friendship and a cohesive community working together to save people. I read the book in two days as it pulled me in like a member of the French community living during the war.

What draws you to historical/biblical fiction?

I have always adored history, a love I inherited from my father. He used to discuss people from history as if they were people in the current newspapers. I think almost 90% of my books must have an historical setting.

You’ve had a successful career writing for the ABA, why start writing for the CBA now?

A few years ago I had an extraordinary experience where God touched my life. This encounter stirred my interest in writing about other people who had experienced the presence of God in their lives and the CBA seemed to be the best place for me to do that.

What is it about the historical account of Esther that led you to write a romance story about her?

When I was a girl Esther fascinated me. It seemed wonderful that God had chosen a woman to be the person who would save His people. And, since I am a romantic soul, I also thought that there must have been a great love between her and the king for him to have done as she asked.

Why did you move away from the traditional interpretation of King Ahasuerus’ conduct?

I always thought that Ahasuerus must have loved Esther deeply because he listened to her and revoked the edict that Haman had sent out. A king who not only allows his wife to break into his religious feast without punishment, but also comes to have dinner with her the following day, must care for her very much indeed. And such a man must be a much nicer person than the king traditionally portrayed by Xerses/ Ahasuerus.

You love animals. Do you ever incorporate them into your books?

Do I not ever incorporate animals into my books? I am famous for my horses, but dogs play their part as well. Unfortunately, I couldn’t put Esther on a horse, but I did make Ahasuerus a fanatical horseman.

What is your favorite historical era to write about?

I love to go way back in time, to periods where the records are mostly archeological. I actually did three books set in the Upper Paleolithic, the period of the last ice age. My next book is about Rahab, and I’m having such fun reading about pottery and stone remains from the late Bronze Age.

My review:

What a beautiful book about a young woman called to fulfill God's plan for His people. I have always admired Esther and reading a novel from the view of what Esther could have been thinking and experiencing is truly amazing. This is a must read book that you will thoroughly enjoy from beginning to end as you embrace Esther's journey from young teen to Queen and the love story that unfolds in this historical fiction.

My Review:

I looked forward to each chapter to learn more about Susannah and Jesse as individuals and as husband and wife. The first year of marriage was full of trials as they struggled with farming, getting to know each other and the miscarriage of their first pregnancy. As grasshoppers consume the crops Jesse feels compelled to seek work elsewhere while leaving Susannah to maintain their territory of land. As the plot develops one wonders if Jesse will survive and return to see his Susannah again. Other characters enter the plot while Jesse is away and Susannah feels pressure to accept a new husband. This is a well written debut novel full of the true meaning of love and commitment. I desire to read a follow up story on the settlers of the Dakota Territory and enjoyed this Christian romance.

School is out!

Last morning of the school year.

Today is the final day of K and 2nd Grade for my little men. I can't believe how rapidly the year has flown by and what a great year it has been. I have seen incredible growth in both boys on all fronts and so thankful to God for blessing me with my sons.

The boys are really enjoying their school (first year for both of them at this location).

This a.m. Liam was downstairs singing What Time Is It? (Summertime) from High School Musical 2 combined with words of his own that came to mind.

We have lots of fun activities planned for the break. I know the time is going to pass so quickly and I will do my best to keep my camera on hand to capture the moments that we will treasure in our hearts years from now.

Can't you just hear High School Musical belting out Summer...Summer...Summer! We are so ready for the end of the school year because I love summer days with my little men that are no longer so little.

When I was a teen my mother conveyed to me that time passes more rapidly the older we get. I didn't grasp it until my 30's. Thirteen years ago this month Glenn proposed to me and now our children are preparing to complete Second Grade and K. They have grown so much this year not only intellectually, but also in their personalities.

Just a few small moments I treasure in my heart:

Liam joining Cub Scouts and embracing it. Seeing my Eagle Scout sharing many a special moment (now a treasured memory) alongside Liam as his Den Leader.

Since the school year began Liam has lost a few teeth. Aaron has yet to lose any.

We adopted our Beagle in December. It warms my heart to hear Aaron call him "Sweet Ums" and for the boys to go downstairs before bed to tell Benny to have sweet dreams.

This was not only Aaron's first year of "official school", but both boys first year in Public School. We could not be more pleased with how things have gone this year and I have met some wonderful parents and teachers this year that I would not have met otherwise.

So, as we prepare for summer my heart yearns to savor each day. The boys were in bed the other night and as Benny and I took a minute together in the backyard my eyes beheld fireflies. It brought back memories of when I was Liam's age and we had just moved to the US and in Ohio visiting some dear people and my eyes beheld fireflies for the first time. Then, my mind wandered to remember people along the journey who walked alongside my parents as they left England and moved to the US. I was then brought back to the present and the devotion of my father in caring for my mother since her stroke 11 months ago.

My Review: Never in all my 41 years have I read a book as accurate and yet full of humor as Sue Ellen's Girl Ain't Fat, She Just Weighs Heavy. I have been residing in North Carolina for almost three years and the topics of humor addressed in this book as so dead on you will find yourself laughing until your stomach is aching! Shellie touches on topics such as hot flashes, men, fitness and health. This book reads like a fluid conversation with a friend.

One of my favorite sayings, "Laughter is the jam on the toast of life; it adds flavor, keeps it from becoming too dry and makes it easier to swallow" - Amish Proverb. This book allowed me to laugh at myself, not take myself so seriously and enjoy where I am in life. No matter if you consider yourself a Southern Belle or a fast tracked New Yorker; you will relish the humor contained in the 320 pages of this great book.

The chapters contain quotes from actual ladies dispersed throughout which add to the topic on hand and there are also many fabulous recipes in the book. I can't wait to read other books by Shellie and have a healthy laugh and hope you will join me!

Adoption, a Mother's Greatest Gift by Tricia Goyer

I held the small baby in my arms, wrapped up in a receiving blanket to keep her warm from the chill of the delivery room, and a voice spoke to me. "Congratulations, Mom."

The congratulations came from an unlikely source--the grandmother of this child, the mother of the sweet birth mother who chose adoption for her baby girl.

To say I was overwhelmed is an understatement. Thankfulness filled my heart--to God who'd answered my prayers and to the birth mom who'd chosen our family for her daughter. I also ached that my joy would be another's heartache. Working with teen moms for ten years, I was often an advocate for the young mother. I knew that while the weeks and months ahead would be a time of celebration for our family, they would be ones of heartache and grieving for this woman.

Adoption is a wonder and the beauty, and the sacrifice of it is never so clear as on Mother's Day. My new daughter is one-years-old now and she huge is a part of my heart. Her life is a gift to my days and her smile can make even the most dreary afternoon bright. I can honestly say there is no difference in the love I feel between her and my three other children. If anything the love feels even more special because she was an unexpected gift. John and I learned about her life just 2 ½ months prior to her being born. The years of prayers to expand our family were answered quickly and beautifully.

The sacrifice of adoption makes my heart ache, for I know on this Mother's Day another woman will be thinking about my daughter—her daughter. As I rejoice, I'll be crying tears for her. I'll also be sending up prayers that God will wrap His arms around her in a special way.

This Mother's Day I cannot help to think about Christ's sacrifice to make our adoption into God's family possible. Maybe it's because just a few weeks ago we were celebrating Easter, but I'm reminded anew that my gain required His loss, His pain. The greatest love, it seems, is not shown with flowers, chocolate or a diamond bracelet. The greatest love is shown when, because of your love for another, your desires and comfort are laid down for the greater good of someone else.

As Ephesians 1:3 says, “How blessed is God! And what a blessing he is! He's the Father of our Master, Jesus Christ, and takes us to the high places of blessing in him. Long before he laid down earth's foundations, he had us in mind, had settled on us as the focus of his love, to be made whole and holy by his love. Long, long ago he decided to adopt us into his family through Jesus Christ. (What pleasure he took in planning this!) He wanted us to enter into the celebration of his lavish gift-giving by the hand of his beloved Son” (The Message).

Perhaps you know an adoptive mother. Take time this Mother's Day to let her know that the beauty of her gift is not missed by you. Also, take time to thank God for adopting you into His forever family, thanking Jesus Christ for His sacrifice. I wouldn't be the mother I am without this Gift of Love.

3 DIY Mother’s Day Gifts that Celebrate Family By Beth Engelman

This Mother’s Day, celebrate family with this crafty games the whole family can enjoy.

Block Photo Puzzle
Not only does this 6-sided photo puzzle provide hours of family fun, but it’s also a great way to reuse favorite family photos.

Materials:
•   9 - Wooden Blocks (Use old alphabet blocks)
•   6 - 8 x 10 Photograph Prints or Colored Copies
•   Ruler
•   Scissors
•   Mod Podge and Paintbrush

Directions:
1. Arrange blocks in a square and measure the length and width of the square.
2. Measure and cut print to the exact same size as the 9-block square.
3. Place blocks in a square on top of print. Position blocks so they’re lined up neatly and as close together as possible.
4. Trace and cut the outline of each block.
5. Glue print pieces to blocks using Mod Podge. Set aside to dry and then seal with 1-2 top layers of Mod Podge.
6. Repeat process until all 6 sides of the blocks are covered with different photographs.

“Go Fish with the Family” Card Game
This gift is perfect for Moms who like card games. Another bonus? There’s always room to “grow” the deck.

Materials:
•   Camera
•   Double stick tape, or a glue stick
•   Several pieces of cardstock (one color)
•   Scissors

Directions:
1.   Take pictures of each family member and develop the pictures in duplicates (3x5 or 4x6 is fine, just make sure all the pictures are the same size).
2.   Turn the pictures into playing cards by gluing or taping a piece of card-stock to the backside of each picture.
3.   Game ideas include “Go Fishing with the Family” which is similar to “Go Fish” but, instead of matching numbers, the object is to collect matching pairs of photos. “Memory” is another fun game to play. Place the cards face down in a grid and try to find matching pairs of photos.

Family Bingo
In my house, Bingo is always a big hit because regardless of age or skill level, everyone has the same chance to win. However this version is extra special because the playing boards are populated with pictures of family members.

Materials:
•   Color Coordinated Game Boards (download here)
•   Images of Family Members (use photographs, drawings or clip art)
•   Bingo Markers (pennies, pebbles or buttons)
•   Glue and Scissors

Directions:
1.   Create the game boards: Download and print desired number of game-boards. Remember each player gets a different game board.
2.   Color-copy and paste images of family members onto each game board. Remember to paste one person per square and make each board slightly different.
3.   Make “call-out cards” by writing the name of each family member in yellow, green, blue, purple and pink (which coordinates with the colors on the board)
4.   To Play: Game play is similar to traditional Bingo except the caller will randomly select a call-out card and then read the color and person. For example, “Blue, Grandma Mary” means there is a picture of Grandma Mary in a blue square. Just like Bingo, the first person to get 5 in a row (horizontally, vertically or diagonally) wins!

Many individuals had spoken so highly of Love and Respect by Dr. Emerson Eggerichs that I wanted to read it myself. The message in the book is very simple and Dr. Eggerichs has chapters the delve more deeply with real life examples and scriptures throughout to encourage the reader.

The message is that men need respect and when given that by their spouse the wife will then receive the love she desires. This book has helped many couples in their quest to have successful marriages. For me, it is a common sense concept that love is a cycle and we must be in sync with one another and the needs of our spouse. As the book progressed it seemed to be a bit redundant to me.

My Review:

The iShine Bible for Boys by Tyndale House Publishers is designed for tweens and I would recommend for ages 7 and up. It is an ideal Bible for your tween son or a tween you know that would enjoy a modern cover of God's Word. The Bible is the NLT and has a leatherlike cover that is slate grey/blue with a contempory image of a teen on the front. It is very attractive and a nice compact size for travel.

There are many fabulous features about this Bible, but my personal favorite is the section in the beginning entitled "iShine index" that conveys what the Bible is, a section on finding your identity in Jesus, growing in your faith and what the Bible talks about. It will be referred to over and over as the tween refers to the topic that has a corresponding verse and section (topics include swearing, thoughts, worries to name a few).

This Bible is a beautiful gift and will be treasured.

Edible Spring Nests

The weather is gorgeous today and I have been wanting to make my family and teachers a treat that is a reminder of the birth of new life all around.

I made chocolate haystacks with Cadbury Mini Eggs in the middle to look like a nest. These are so easy to make and would be a lovely treat for someone you love.

Prep time: 10 minutes
Total time: About 1 hour (including time in fridge)
Makes: 22 Spring Nests

What you need:

1 cup of semi-sweet chocolate chunks or chips
1 cup of butterscotch chips (could use semi-sweet if you don't like butterscotch)
2 cups chow mein noodles (in the Asian section of Target/Walmart or your local grocery store)
2 cups miniature marshmallows
1/2 cup peanuts (I omitted these and added a bit more chow mein noodles instead)
Wax Paper

Directions:

Microwave the semi-sweet and butterscotch chips in a microwavable bowl about 45 seconds and then stir. Place back in microwave for another 15 sections and stir again. The chips should be melted. If the chips are not melted add another 10 seconds.

Add to your remaining ingredients and stir until evenly coated.

Drop by spoonfuls onto a large piece of wax paper. Press slightly in the middle and add 2-3 mini eggs. Refrigerate for approximately 1 hour or until firm. Store in covered container in fridge until ready to serve or gift.

**You could also use jelly beans in lieu of the mini eggs and would look great on a display of green colored coconut or Easter basket grass.**

My Review:

Joanna has been one of my favorite authors for a few years. Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World greatly impacted me and I enjoyed doing the book as a study with a dear friend. Lazarus Awakening is another amazing book that comes with a study guide you can utilize for each of the ten chapters. Joanna also have some incredible resources in the appendix including how to recognize our strongholds, and scripture references to read for who we are in Christ. This book conveys in a beautiful way how Christ not only wants to give us resurrection (new life in Him), but living our life in Christ to the fullest. Joanna's insightful writing will stay with you months after reading the final page and hopefully, like me, encourage and challenge you in your Christian walk.

My Review:

Matt's new book is a necessary tool for all engaged and married couples. Matt writes in a way that assists couples in understanding how each other views money and provides a comprehensive ten step action plan to reach your financial goals. My Review: 5/5

The Clouds Roll Away was a favorite of mine so found myself thrilled when this next novel was released for review. The beauty of the Raleigh Harmon novels is that you can enjoy them in sequence or independently. Be warned; when you read one of the series you will feel compelled to read the others which is definitely an indication of a great author.

Sibella, one of my favorite authors, weaves an incredible story bringing each character to life as each page turns. As I read The Mountains Bow Down it was as if I was on the cruise standing in the same room with Raleigh Harmon watching her interact with family, co-worker, cruise personnel and the husband of the deceased (to name a few). Sibella's writing has an incredible way or weaving humor in the story. I found myself laughing out loud reading the book as I related to Raleigh and her mental and sometimes spoken way of responding to people and situations.
Raleigh goes on a cruise as an engaged lady, hopeful for a vacation from work and thoughts of her engagements, however, this trip is anything but a vacation and things get complicated with the entry of Jack on the scene and a discovered body with only a few days to solve the case. You will enjoy this book and find it one worth burning the midnight oil to read!

A Day of Firsts

We each hand fed a giraffe.

I LOVE the days on the calendar where I am able to pen the words NO SCHOOL. Today was one such day. It is Friday, sunny and 83 degrees and the boys were with me all day long. We decided to visit the zoo in Columbia, SC. We had never been and the drive to and from wasn't too bad (100 miles each way)

We had a great time venturing around and took full advantage of all the zoo offered including feeding the giraffe, riding the train, viewing a 3D movie, pony ride and seeing all kinds of great creatures in person.

Aaron enjoyed his first ever pony ride.

My Review:

When I read that the novel was based in England I immediately knew I would enjoy it since I was born and resided in Great Britain until the age of 8. Mel has an incredible way with words and pens the novel in old english that reads as if you are in that era with Hugh and Kate. The novel has mystery, wit and very clean romance. Starr is an incredible writer that draws you in to the location, plot and characters as you devour each written page anxious to learn more. This is the third book regarding the character of Hugh and I now desire to have the opportunity to read the first two, however, this books reads very well as a stand alone novel.

Mel's writing is superb and the story amazing. I give this book a 5/5.

My Personal Review:

This book is a must read by all women no matter what stage of life. One of my favorite parts of the book is found on page 142 "A choice for one thing is a choice against another". Life is full of situations and opportunities. There is valuable insight and life guidance tips no matter if you are spending your daylight hours with a newborn at home or as a top executive. This book provides thought provoking questions and things to consider no matter your season of life and how to live each day to the fullest as you carry out your calling. The subtitle of Thriving in a Do-It-All-World snagged me. It doesn't say; thriving and doing it all. The honesty this books conveys about how our choices impact not only the present, but future seasons of our life is insightful while also being sensitive to each of our individual situations and callings.

I believe you will find this book not only insightful, but impactful on you not only today, but as you continue on your journey as a woman. Aaron Craig first day

On this date, six years ago, we welcomed our second child, Aaron to our family. Words can't express the blessing it is to have him as part of our family. A life with two sons is full of noise, laughter, legos, duplos, trains and in our house the more trains and tracks the better! I am so grateful and in awe of God's goodness in allowing me to be Aaron's mother.

Our baby is over half way through his Kindergarten year at school. So many changes in a year. Aaron is reading and absorbing so much literacy and mathematics at school. He gets along well with others and is a rule follower. He is full of joy, laughter and loves to talk.

He takes after me in that you can immediately tell by looking at him if he is happy or sad. At the age of six Aaron adores GeoTrax, Trains, our pets, his big brother, reading, math, AWANA, Theatre Class, school and times of leisure at home.

I don't take these days for granted. My hubby and I were just commenting that Aaron's years at home are 1/3 of the way over, unless he stays with us after high school. My Heart is so Grateful

I am taking part in a seasonal swap. It is so much fun and Maddie was assigned me! Maddie is the eldest daughter of a beautiful family. I have known her parents for many years. Her mom and I went to high school together and University (both parents).

The box arrived with a ring at the door. Who should be there, but Harold our trusty mail carrier. It arrived quick as a wink and all intact containing goodies galore!

On top of the box was this sweet note Maddie penned and enclosed. Beneath it was a red reuseable bag.

I received a lovely silver frame which is perfect to place a photograph of me and my love. Thank you so much Maddie!

Stunning ivory gloves that are so cozy and soft.

For those of you that keep up with me on facebook, you may have read how I lost my gloves after Christmas. These are greatly needed and beautiful too!

A beautiful Fossil cosmetic bag that had lots of goodies. The cosmetic bag pull is in the shape of a heart key...stunning!

It contains two ring pops (for Liam and Aaron which they have already consumed), Honeymoon Red Nail Polish, Burt's Bees Lip Shimmer, and a $10 gift card to Starbucks...I hit the jackpot!

The First Month with Benny

It doesn't seem possible that it has already been a full month since Benny joined our family. If you missed the story of his adoption check out this post here.

The past month has zoomed by. The changes we have experienced since getting Benny:

1. The boys are getting more exercise as we take him on a nice long afternoon walk after homework each day which is great and we are really enjoying our chats as we take him out.

2. NO FOOD can be left out anywhere at all because Benny CAN AND WILL smell it, want it and find a way to reach it.

When Benny was new to our family we didn't realize the height his tiny legs could jump. Glenn had made two loaves of homemade bread and they were pushed back on the kitchen counter to cool while we were getting Liam and Aaron read for bed. I was upstairs and heard a loud noise from Glenn (very uncommon) so ran down to find him staring a two big holes in the middle of each loaf of fresh bread. If Glenn hadn't caught Benny on the counter I am sure it would have resulted in Benny having a very full belly of whole wheat bread.

3. Each morning early before anything else Benny is taken out for a potty break. When we first got him he enjoyed a nice long walk, but since the mornings have been cold he prefers to be taken out and come back in when he has completed the task at hand and will tug very hard to let you know he is under no circumstances going to be taken around the neighborhood before 6 a.m. when the temperature is around 30 degrees.

4. Benny is given a weekly bath. I really enjoy giving it to him, but he is not so sure about it. It is also planned for the day I do my thorough cleaning of the boys bathroom since Beagle hair gets everywhere!

5. Benny loves to sit on my lap while I am on the computer.

Benny is a very important part of our family. I wonder what his story was during the first four years of his life and hope any pain/sadness he may have experienced will be forgotten as he is now in his forever home.

Liam's Baptism

On Saturday evening, January 22nd Liam was Baptized. It was in December of 2009 thatLiam made a personal commitment to become a Christian and about six months ago started to speak with us about his desire to be Baptized. Our church had a parent/child informational meeting to attend before the Baptism and Liam took part.

We are so excited that he wanted to publically express his personal decision to be a follower of Jesus. It was a very special time. We got him some special balloons and went out to dinner after the service to celebrate and came home to have cake in his honor.

When he was baptized we were able to stand up there with him. I had tears in my eyes. Aaron loved being present to witness the Baptism too. It was a wonderful opportunity to witness Liam taking this step in his walk of faith.

My Review:

This is one of the most enjoyable books that I have read.  Once you open the pages you will not want to put to put the book down as you desire to see the relationships unfold and learn more about the life of Lainey and Bess and the other characters and how they are interwoven. It is a beautiful story of secrets ultimately resulting in love and forgiveness. The characters are vivid and their personalities develop as each chapter is consumed.

Bess is a young lady at the beginning of the book and shows dramatic maturity by the end having experienced life changing news, the loss of a dear loved one and her first heart break. Lainey displays unconditional love and sacrifice on many levels and is a character that displays the epitome of Christian living. At the onset,  the summer contains hardship for both Lainey and Bess, however, culminates in ultimate freedom. Freedom full of truth, love, growth and faith.

In addition to Bess and Lainey, there are many unique characters in this book. As you come to know Simon, Billy, Bertha, Jonah, Mose, Sallie, Caleb, Robin, Alley, and others I am confident you will relate to each in a unique way.

This is the first of Suzanne's books I have read. I did not read the other two books in the series, but this can be read as a stand alone.  There is redemption and reconciliation for all and as I read the pages I felt as if I was there walking with them on their journey and was moved by the true Christian qualities emulated by the characters. This wholesome books contains wonderful life lessons. A must read!

Hatteras Girl by Alice J. Wisler

This book follows approximately a year in the life of Jackie Donovan who is a single lady close to the age of 30 working a reporter for a local publication. Jackie's days are consumed with interviewing local businesses for her work, going on blind dates and caring for her best friends son who is Kindergarten age while her best friend juggles the responsibility of working two part-time jobs and being a widow.

Reading this book is like sitting down and learning about the details of the life of a close friend. The main character, Jackie Donovan, is lovely and possesses incredible loyalty, love of family and dreams that she desires to fulfill. Most women will find her easy to relate to as Jackie struggles with family commitments, desire for a life partner and the dream of owning her own Bed and Breakfast. Jackie's friends and family are quirky, real and experience love and loss.

The book ends with Jackie's dream of owning a Bed and Breakfast and true loving coming to fruition. As you follow Jackie's decisions and revelations you can see how the hand of God protects and guides and gives her the desires of her heart. I highly recommend this work of Christian Fiction by Bethany House and give it 5/5 stars.

Pushie by Frances Burgharst

Pushie by Frances Burgharst is a very creative book about a young cat named Pushie who takes an out of this world adventure! This short story of 24 pages takes us in to the life of Pushie a cat who was a gift to Tommy by his grandmother and is a delightful and curious creature. He lives in a very loving home and feels safe and secure until the evening he ventures outside. Once outside Pushie enjoys running and chasing and comes upon what appears to be a huge bowl of milk. As he approaches the bowl and enters he soon discovers it is a moving object. Read the book to see how Pushie handles the strangers he encounters and how the story ends well.

Voices of the Faithful is a beautiful compilation of fellow Believers sharing the love of Christ throughout the globe. This book is a 366 day devotional with stories of the faithfulness of God in the lives of every day men and women furthering the kingdom.

Each story is unique and an accurate account of an individual experience. The Chapters of this devotional are by month of the year with each month having a theme. For example, January is God's Character while October focuses on Spiritual Warfare. Each daily reading has a title, scripture, personal account that relates to the monthly topic and closes with a prayer.

This is by far one of the most influential devotionals I have had the privilege to read. The back of the devotional also provides concrete ways to pray for missionaries, our role in missions and that of the church.

I highly recommend Voices of the Faithful for individual use or for reading together as a family. It would also be a lovely gift.

Possession is an outstanding work of fiction. I was intrigued in the first chapter and as the story unfolded it had many interesting twists and turns and enjoyed this piece of suspense immensely.

What is at stake counts for everything, but nothing can prepare Vance for who is behind it.

My review: We see human nature in the pure innocence and faith of Connor and then the complete opposite in the unraveling of people too. As the chapters unfold you learn more about Vance, his wife Lindy and son Connor along with other individuals who are instrumental not only in the storyline, but also their life. Vance's old partner Erin is a complicated woman full of hate and regret. Amidst the relationship hardship between Vance and Lindy including deceit and pure brokenness we see the faith of their eight year old son Connor with such pure innocence and belief. It is Connor that provides the light Vance and Lindy need to believe in God and for faith to be born in their critical moment.

The book title Possession refers to the belongings of Vance and his family that are being kept for ransom by a character named Joe. However, as you read the book you will see that it also refers to the desire of an individual to control and possess another. You will read about the relationship of Lindy and her mom that albeit is strained her mother loves her daughter loves her completely. There is also the character of Karen who desires to be loved by another human being. As the book ends you see the Hand of God on the family of protection.

This is an amazing book that is well worth reading. The book gives insight in to the hurt we experience as a result of sinful choices. We see in a picture of words and scenes how faith is the only solution to peace and happiness. The book also includes an interview with the author and discussion questions that would be ideally suited for a book club.

Keeping It Real

My friend Nikki has posted some great thoughts on her family about "Keeping It Real". I plan to do posts along the same lines when something transpires that is worth communicating.

Well, on Friday after school I told the boys we had to make a stop to pick up a few books that were being held for me and my friend. We arrived at Proverbs 31 Ministries office and were greeted by Melissa. I have read Melissa's blog for several years, but not met her in person. She is such a beautiful lady inside and out and it was a delight to stand there with her for a few minutes.

As she completed a phone order Liam looks at me and says, "I think they believe in God". The office has many crosses on the walls and I explained to Liam, that this is a Christian Ministry and yes, the ladies all know Jesus. Liam is always thrilled to meet a fellow Believer. It warmed my heart.

Then, Aaron, my 5 year old, says to Melissa, "You REALLY need to take down your Christmas Tree here. Christmas has been over you know". He actually said it to her more than once. I was so embarrassed, but Melissa was as sweet as can be. The office had many, many orders ready to be shipped and I know they have been swamped for the past several weeks with the beginning of the Made to Crave book and study. Two Tickets to the Christmas Ball by Donita K. Paul is one of the loveliest books I have read. The book is 226 pages long and published by WaterBrook Press.

This is the first book by Donita K. Paul I have had the opportunity to read. I am planning to research and read more of her offerings and look forward to her future offerings. Donita has a great website that you can access by clicking here. You can also view a trailer for the book here.

Two Tickets to the Christmas Ball is a book to be enjoyed any season and is about a lovely single woman names Cora and a gentleman at the same company named Simon. The story unfolds of their unlikely out of office interaction at an old bookstore and continues from there.

Both Cora and Simon are Believers in God, however, Cora's faith was not something that developed from childhoold like Simons. As the book shares details regarding the personalities and background of each character we learn that Cora has lived through some hard circumstances and Simon has been born and raised in a very loving and supportive home. Simon has been blessed with a lovely and open hearted sister named Sandy, whereas Cora's sister plays a role in the storyline that is not positive. It is beautiful to see how God brings them together with the help of some magic which I believe are really angels at work.

Two Tickets to the Christmas Ball is magical in terms of the relationship and the mystery involved in Sage Street and the Ball details. I loved every aspect of the story. The book ends very well, however, I wasn't ready for the story of Cora and Simon to conclude. I would love to see Donita write more about their continuing relationship.

Benny

Benny joined our family on Wednesday, December 29. This past Monday the 27th of December we went to visit the Humane Society to see what dogs they had available for adoption. In conversing with the Behavorial Specialist she recommended that we visit two dogs. One was Benny.

Benny is 4 years and 2 months old and a purebred Beagle. He is lovely! We visited him on Monday and turned in our application to make us his forever family. On Wednesday the Humane Society indicated he was ready to come home and we picked him up late that afternoon.

The first night Benny cried on and off, but hasn't since that time. The Humane Society didn't know if Benny was housetrained, but he is and hasn't had an accident in the house thus far. This will be Benny's fifth night in our family and he is adjusting really well and we love him dearly.

The Humane Society indicated it could take up to two full weeks for Benny to adjust to us as he was in The Humane Society since October which is a long time to not live in a home. Many dogs are adopted within 30 days. Benny may have been there longer due to his age, but I have to think he was there waiting for us and God knew when we would be ready to bring him home.

Praying through Christmas cards

Hopefully, like me, you love checking your mailbox from Thanksgiving until Christmas. We are thrilled to open each Christmas letter and card from those we love both near and far. It is so fun to get photographs enclosed showing how the children have grown each year. It is a beautiful picture of God's grace when we receive a photograph of a couple, pet or family with children. It is one of my very favorite things each year. Glenn and I have lived in three states since we wed 11 years ago and love keeping up with those dear to us.

In years past; I made a Christmas scrapbook where I placed all the photo greeting cards, however, in all honesty, that scrapbook is on a shelf and the photographs have not received the attention they deserve for the thought that went in to the family photographs, printing and mailing of each. It is no small time commitment or cost to send them out and we so appreciate each one we are honored to receive. As I have two young boys I know it is no easy feat to get a family ready for a portrait.

Here are a few ways to pray for those friends and family that send you a card:

1. When January 1 appears place all the photograph/cards in a basket and each night at dinner have someone in the home select a card. This is a wonderful way to share with your children or spouse the history of the relationship, trials the family may be facing currently or in the past prior to uplifting them in prayer. When the basket is empty you can place them all in again and start over if you wish.

2. Number each photograph/card on the back with a number. This would work well with small children that are learning their numbers and dates. For the day of the month you pray for that special family/individual with the number that correlates with the calendar month (months of the year that don't have 31 days families with those numbers will be prayed for the last day of the month).

3. This same idea can be used by last name. Place all last name A's together etc. through Z and place them in order and pray for those last names through the alphabet.

4. Lastly, if the above ideas are too overwhelming for you I would encourage you to place the cards in a large manila envelope and put aside. In early January I will be sharing how to establish a Prayer Basket and you may want to utilize the Christmas photograph greetings received for the Basket if you opt to implement one for your personal use.

Book Review: I was thrilled to receive this incredible work of fiction with a storyline based in Richmond, Virginia. I resided in Richmond from January 1997 - January 2003 so the book had special meaning to me. This is the first of Sibella Giorello's books I have read and I intend to read her other published works. Sibella is an incredibly articulate and talented writer.

The Clouds Roll Away immediately drew me in as the character of Raleigh Harmon is so easy to relate. It was wonderful to turn the pages and be with her as she visits old stomping grounds, and classmates from her formative years along with handling a very challenging career and FBI case and interacting with an old flame. I was hooked in the first chapter and couldn't put it down! The book has a beautiful ending that occurs at Christmas which is perfect as we are in the Christmas season.

The book handles issues of the heart inclusive of conflict, love and hate that human nature struggles. I highly recommend this book and encourage you to read The Clouds Rolls Away.

Party Cheese Ball

This is such a wonderful time of the year as we prepare our hearts to celebrate the day our Savior was born. Amidst all the excitement there seem to be parties galore and lots of details we have to accomplish. This afternoon my family is attending a little Christmas party and we are to bring something to share.

This cheese ball only took me 2 minutes to make and is a yummy appetizer to share with others.

Ingredients:

2 packages (8 ounces) Cream Cheese, softened (regular or 1/3 reduced fat)

1 package (8 ounces) Shredded Sharp Cheddar Cheese

2 teaspoons of Worcestershire sauce

4 slices of bacon (cooked and crumbled) - I omit this from my cheese balls

Crackers to serve on the side

Directions:

Mix all ingredients together and roll in three balls (large, medium and small).
Place on a platter in the refrigerator for an hour before serving.

I use a carrot for the nose, pretzels for arms and raisins for the eyes, mouth and buttons, but you can also use peppercorns. It is not necessary to have a hat, but since I had oreos and large marshmallows on hand my boys asked me to give him a hat.

This recipe can also be rolled in nuts of your choice and in the shape of one of two cheese balls and freezes beautifully.

On This Day in Christian History by Robert J. Morgan

I was really excited about receiving a copy of On This Day in Christian History by Robert J. Morgan as it has a reading for each calendar day on an event that took place in Christian History. The book has a lovely cover, however, the content did not live up to my expectations.

Some of the daily readings were encouraging, however, many I would not have included in the book and some left me asking why on earth the writer selected certain facts about people that needed to not be included in written form and were far from uplifting and encouraging.

I anticipated the daily readings to contain an actual fact that took place on that date in history, however, you will not find that each day.

One redeeming quality of the book is that the bottom of each day contains a passage of scripture. This book would be of interest to individuals that like obscure facts.

Amy Inspired by Bethany Pierce

Reading Amy Inspired by Bethany Pierce was pure delight. It is a fiction book about a single woman named Amy on the cusp of turning 30 who is an aspired writer and adjunct professor. The story has many depths as we read about Amy's relationship with her family, her roomie, a third male room mate that enters the picture along with the dynamics of co-workers, her students and their relationships with others.

Albeit the story is a work of fiction it is right in line with many issues that Christian woman are facing. The story shows some of Amy's relationships grow, some have difficulty and some awkward times with co-workers and students. You will feel like Amy as you read of her roomie whose mother is struggling with cancer and a student who has lost her sister and experiencing deep grief. As Amy's roomie (Zoe) brings a male to stay with them things change dramatically.

The ending is lovely and well worth the read. If you are looking for a wonderful book I encourage you to pick up a copy of Amy Inspired. When the book ended I closed it with deep satisfaction in knowing that all was well in Amy's world and why the book is called Amy Inspired.

My neighbor delivered some of these goodies yesterday for a Thanksgiving treat. They are fabulous and so easy to make. If you want to make some without nuts you can top with a colored M & M in lieu of the pecan and also use a Hershey Kiss in lieu of a rolo. These make great little gifts for people and don't take a great deal of prep.

Click here for the how to on how to make this yummy treat. These can be given any time of year. You could use regular M & M's for a birthday and the seasonal M & M colors they put out at Valentine's, Easter etc. for the specific occasion.

As we prepare to approach the holiday season my heart is focused on the true meaning of Christmas and what is meant to me as a small child and now as a parent myself. The Gift Santa's First Christmas by Randall Cummings is a lovely small book that shares a lovely relationship of a small boy and how he becomes the child of a King and Queen. In this story he goes with the king to bestow a gift to baby Jesus as they follow the star. The story continues as we follow the development of this young man to adulthood and he becomes Santa Claus. This thirty one page paperback book which is produced by Dorrance Publishing has a few black and white illustrations. It would make an ideal gift for a child ages 8 and up and even for a family. Albeit the story is not lengthy, the content has many facets that will resonate with children and adults alike. The story contains selflessness, kindness, faith, and love. Run to Overcome by Meb Keflezighi

It is rare that I read a book that not only can I not put down, but that is imbedded with valuable life lessons that can be communicated in daily dialogue with loved ones and friends. Run to Overcome by Meb Keflezighi is such a book. It allows the reader the privilege of following Meb on his journey from birth to present and understand the true meaning of victory.

The book provides the reader with incredible inspiration as you read about the fortitude of Meb and his family that began with his birth in Eritrean and has carried him in to his adult years as a professional runner, husband and father. Meb arrived in the United States at the age of twelve not speaking a word of English and without the knowlege that running was a professional sport.

He started out as a soccer player in school and with the guidance of people who saw his running potential at a young age he has been able to fulfill his potential and become the athlete he is today. As the chapters unfold we not only learn about Meb and his journey as an individual and athlete, but how he developed deep relationships with others that continue to this day. More important than the impressive running scores and wins detailed in the book as the 2009 New York City Marathon winner and an Olympic Medalist is the insight shared of his perseverance, loyalty and high ethical standards.

Meb's devotion to his family, friends, God and fortitude are what make him the epitome of an American star. I Lift Up My Soul by Charles Stanley and published by Thomas Nelson is a beautiful hard cover devotional book. There is an entry for each date in the calendar year. Each day provides a topic of focus and a passage of scripture to read from the Bible. There is a key verse for each date that is provided on each page along with a one page topical focus. One of the most appealing aspects of this devotional to me is that it provides the key verse typed on the page and also ends with a prayer for the reader.

This book is stunning in appearance with hidden gems inside. The devotional only takes a few minutes to read each day, but will be of great benefit to the owner as it assists in focusing on the eternal not the temporal. Dr. Stanley's words are easy to read, however, full of truth and depth.

I Lift Up My Soul would be an ideal addition to a personal library or as a gift and in my opinion is appropriate for anyone age 12 and up.

The Pursuit of Holiness by Jerry Bridges

The Pursuit of Holiness by Jerry Bridges was a very thought provoking book. The book focuses on the Christ follower desiring to pursue holiness. The book discusses how we as Christians need to take responsibility in our Christian walk. The book was difficult for me to read due to the truth of the words and the realization of how we as Christians need to live our life and carry on our personal marathon of pursuing holiness.

I have been a believer for over 30 years, however, found the book to really speak to my heart in my desire to live a holy life and not fall prey to accepting defeat. The book focuses on the role of the Holy Spirit in assisting us in our pursuit of holiness and how as humans we are not able to do it on our own. The chapters unfold full of scriptures to read and focus on as one reads the material communicated.

This book is one that I would read again and highly recommend to other Christian believers. It is well written and references scripture throughout.
